Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for December 2010 – Wu Affiliate Special : Knew Legend of Shaolin

We return after a lengthy absence to continue our Wu Affiliate Specials in association with Chambermusik.com. This month we have exclusive interviews with Hanz On & Soloman Childs !

In March this year we exhibited the skills and fortunes of Lord Superb who was part of Raekwon’s crew ‘American Cream Team’. This time we are joined by Hanz On of another Raekwon affiliated group called ‘Ice Water Clique ‘. Apart from his undoubted talent as a rapper (a prerequisite for membership of a Raekwon affiliate group), his claim to fame is that he (pardon the pun) put his ‘Hanz On’ Joe Budden’s face... (sorry….I know it’s cheap and lazy, but I couldn’t resist it!!!).

Soloman Childs is most notable for his excellent supporting verses on Cappadonna and Ghostface Killah’s songs and albums as well as membership of the Ghostface affiliate project ‘Theodore Unit’. He has solo releases, ‘The King of New York’, ‘Learn My Name’, ‘You Don’t Want War’ and others. His latest solo release ‘The Young General’ follows in the same vain, released via Chambermusik, it’s a must for all real Wu-heads!!!

We also must apologise for not being able to bring you the show for a few months, we are all knee deep in production of our solo projects. As you know by the high standard of music on each of our shows, when we do it we do it properly and to the highest level, so do bear with us and we promise to try to get a show to you as often as possible.

Thanks for the love and patience!!!

Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for June 2010

This month we have been are celebrating our 4th year Anniversary and have special guest appearances from The A Alikes and Roc Marciano.

This was originally planned for the May Show, but we felt we had to dedicate the entire month to remembering Guru and what he had done for us and Hip Hop. Our song ‘In Memory of…(Guru Tribute) featuring Juxtapose, Traum Diggs & Karl Hinds is still available for download on this site, but also on our You Tube Draft Pick Mix Show Channel.

I first heard of The A Alikes in around 2005 when I was first drafted to the Draft Pick DJ’s by DJ Victorious via Sincere Wise. They are known for their revolutionary lyrics and pro black stance and are part of a collective of artists such as Dead Prez, Immortal Technique and Mos Def. We seized the opportunity to interview them when we received their promo copy of ‘Sirens in the distance’ featuring Mos Def. A Black was available at the time and we spoke at length about Hip Hop, Revolutionary Rap, Barrack Obama, Melanin and much more. An edited version of the interview will be available on Knew’s podcast soon.

Roc Marciano, like most rappers, has been rapping since he could remember. His official debut was on a Bustah Rhymes album on a song called ‘The Heist’ featuring, Raekwon & Ghostface Killah! After that he did a few verses with Bustah, but got his first release via a brilliant rap group called ‘The UN’ with the legendary Pete Rock very much involved. He is now ready to unleash a solo effort and spoke to us exclusively. His interview with me will be available on Knew’s podcast soon.

Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for May 2010

This month we have been remembering the legendary Guru

We had originally planned to feature The A Alikes and Roc Marciano, but we felt that they would understand if we took the month of May to help our listenership celebrate the life and works of Guru.

We re uploaded the exclusive D Shanks interview with Guru & Solar featured originally in February 2009 and the Febrauary 2009 Draft Pick Mix Show with Guru, Solar & DJ 279.

DJ D’Chris of the Caribbean Draft Pick Mix Show uploaded an excellent mix of Guru’s best loved music entitled ‘Tribute to Guru the Legend’, this was uploaded as well this month.

We at the Draft Pick Mix Show wanted to honour his memory appropriately and felt that we would do our own tribute song to say our piece, so I called up Traum Diggs, Juxtapose and Karl Hinds to drop verses on how Guru influenced them in their careers as hip hop artists. The song is called In Memory of… (Guru Tribute) and is now available on the Draft Pick Mix Show’s You Tube Channel.

We will return as normal next month with a bumper edition of the Draft Pick Mix Show as it is our 4th anniversary, so do look out for that!!

Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for April 2010

This month we have some homegrown talent repping the London streets from East to South West London – Karl Hinds & Nutty NRG

Before we go into the stories behind our two Special Guests, we at the Draft Pick Mix Show would like to say R.I.P to one of Hip Hop’s Godfather’s – Guru. We we’re given the honour of interviewing him exclusively for the February 2009 Mix Show and that mix has been re uploaded. Guru will live on through his music!!

Those who are familiar with Wandsworth Shopping Centre will agree with me that a lot of concentration goes into getting from A to B whilst avoiding the workers on lunch break, the students, the pram pushers, the Sainsbury’s shoppers... you get the picture!
The last thing you wanna do is waste time on … well… time wasters, so when I saw a group of trendy looking dudes with a stack of cd’s in hand, I thought ‘ere we go’.

However, something was different about these dudes, they looked serious about their grind, so I took a cd and hoped for the best. Two songs into the Nutty NRG mixtape and I was like ‘OK… iz dat how dey goin on!!!’ and got on the phone with them to arrange an interview. Seriously, these dudes are as talented as ANY up and coming artist from London you might can name and yet again we are proud to promote this hot homegrown talent on the Draft Pick Mix Show. Just let the haters know where you heard them first!!

Whilst on You Tube searching for some rare UK Hip Hop video clips, I saw a dude dissing some of the UK legends, I was like ‘Whaaat?!’. A new younger rapper called Smiler made a track about the UK scene dropping names in between and being rather disrespectful to some artists. Some of the names he mentioned were Skinnyman, Klashnekoff, Roots Manuva, Ty, Karl Hinds & Jehst.

He had been on, my boy, DJ 279’s classic radio show defending his position. I saw that Karl Hinds & Klashnekoff had responded, so I holla’d at Karl Hinds for his take on the situation. His point of view about the track and the game in general, had never really been highlighted so I asked him if he would be ok to do a quick interview, he agreed. The full interview is up already and exclusive to The Draft Pick Mix Show…of course.

R.I.P Guru - Exclusive Full Uncut Interview with D Shanks for The Draft Pick Mix Show

It is with deep regret that we at the Draft Pick Mix Show re upload this interview with the legendary Guru and his Producer ally, Solar.

We interviewed the two of them exclusively for the February Mix Show 2009 with our own D Shanks throwing the questions.

I learned of his death earlier on today quite by chance and our most sincere condolences go out to his family.

This interview was a celebration of his glorious career with many of the songs we loved thrown in.

During the interview he wanted to stress that Hip Hop in it's rawest form is still alive and that strides should be made to bridge the gap between the younger and older generations. At the end of the day we all wanna hear good music and our point of view is that his contribution to Hip Hop in that regard will no doubt bring us all closer together.

Draft Pick February 10 Mix Show with Special Guests Shyheim & Armageddon

Welcome to the Draft Pick February 10 Mix Show with Special Guests Armageddon & Shyheim.

Again we bring you the realest Hip Hop from U.S to U.K in conjunction with Chambermusik.com!

I spoke exclusively with Armageddon from the legendary Terror Squad crew which of course included the Legendary Big Pun, Fat Joe, Remi Ma and other lyrically gifted artists. To his credit he had an entire track on his own on Fat Joe’s ‘Don Cartegena’ album and appeared on the classic ‘Firewater’ track with Fat Joe, Big Pun & Raekwon. He has a typically hot single out called ‘It’s Over’ and is currently working on his album. Exerts of my interview with Armageddon feature on the show, but do look out for his album!!

Shyheim appeared on the Hip Hop horizon in 1993 with his first single ‘On and On’, as a youngster rapping street rhymes a couple of years after Kriss Kross with Jermaine Dupri. Unlike Kriss Kross, he was able to successfully maintain lyrical respectability in the Game by holding his own alongside the likes of Smoothe Da Hustla, Raekwon & Method Man. However, not everything has gone to plan in his career, some years incarcerated have taken their toll. Thankfully this has not discouraged the Staten Island lyricist and once again we are blessed to witness another great Shyheim project. His latest mixtape is called ‘Disrespectfully Speaking’ and is available now on Itunes.

D Shanks spoke to Shyheim exclusively for The Draft Pick Mix Show and Chambermusik.com which also has the uncut interview.

Do also check out the Draft Pick Mix Show Channel on You Tube for any updates, video’s, promo tracks & interviews etc.

The Draft Pick Mix Show Presents …The Best of Wu09: Wu Ninja’s in the Dragons Den
Explicit
January 14, 2010 01:31 PM PST

Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for January 2010 introduced by P Da Rebel in association with Chambermusik.com!!

I hope you enjoyed the December 09 show with Traum Diggs and Sha Stimuli! For January, we’re doing another Chambermusik.com special, this time reviewing the great Wu Affiliate shows of last year and featuring music from Dom Pacino, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Buddha Monk and others.

Whilst in New York recently, I met up with D Shanks. I told him I wanted to buy some kung fu flicks from Chinatown, so we took a drive through Canal Street. Due to the limited parking and crazy driving (New York, New York) we figured we’d find a good parking space and check in each store. By some weird twist of fate, the only parking spot we could find was outside a crazy kung fu DVD store in Brooklyn on Duffield Street!!

They had mad classics, even some films that I had forgotten about like Ninja in the Dragons Den starring Conan Lee and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film is action packed with some dodgy English dubbing and a few great sound bytes. If you’re into kung fu films, I strongly suggest you kop this film immediately. I have included some of these sound bytes into this months mix presentation alongside some of the very best of Wu tang & Wu Affiliate music, enjoy!

Do also check out the Draft Pick Mix Show Channel on You Tube for any updates, video’s, promo tracks & interviews etc.

The 'Authorised' Biography of MJ - Remember

The ‘Authorised’ Biography of Michael Jackson

Welcome again to the Draft Pick Mix Show, this episode is simply my personal tribute to an artist who has produced some of best music I have ever heard!

I was too young to appreciate how much of a talent Michael was until I kopped the ‘Thriller’ album in the early 80’s. At that period in time he became so big that I can remember a few young Nigerians in Hackney (East London) wearing a Michael Jackson type leather jacket, tight jeans and Jeri curl…upon reflection they did look really silly, but no one cared as we all loved Michael!!!

There was so much going for Michael, he was unique, a gifted dancer, humble and had a beautiful voice that could not be matched. His dance routines on his live shows were magnificent, I couldn’t help thinking ‘How did he come up with that?!?’ He also went on to pretty much master the Moonwalk and robot, but was hurt when he criticized street dancing.

After listening to ‘Thriller’ and ‘Off the Wall’ as a kid, my 2 greatest wishes were to meet Michael and go to Disneyland. In later life, I felt less attached to Michael’s music as I went into a different direction musically than the music he went on to produce. I started to love Hip Hop and with his multiple millions, he was almost the total opposite of the streets hip hop came from and his music reflected that.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t appreciate some of his post Thriller work, but it just wasn’t the same for me. With his untimely death, I had resisted rushing together a 2-bit nonsense mixtape like so many DJ’s on the internet (shame on dem bwoy dem) as I felt strongly that it gotta be done right!!! Therefore I took a few months to research his life’s work including the Jacksons and have tried to compile and mix a show that best reflects the music I so much loved, I sincerely hope you like it!!!

Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for November 2009! This month we got 2 really talented artists from either side of the pond.

I first met Supreme in 2002 after seeing his crew BS5 on the classic Dark N Cold UK Untapped Vol.2 video. On a video that had many great performances from UK legends, it was BS5’s performance that stood out. I had to get them on my next mixtape and got at them via Dark N Cold, since then they have unfortunately disbanded, but their lead rapper Supreme has embarked on a solo career and so here we are at it again.

Kam Moye has been around on the underground circuit for some time now under the name Supastition. We had him on the November 2007 show where he first revealed to D Shanks that he will be releasing music as Kam Moye . So what is the difference between Kam Moye & Supastition? I hear you ask, listen to his album ‘Splitting Image’ for the answer!!

Draft Pick October 09 Mix Show with Special Guests Locksmyth & Kyza Smirnoff

Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for October 2009! This month we return to the UK to highlight some real hot homegrown talent.

Kyza Smirnoff aka Kyza came onto the scene as part of the powerful North London group ‘Terrafirma’ lead by Klashnekoff. I remember his verse on the B side of the brilliant Jehst single ‘Alcoholic Author’ and knew that he and Terrafirma would be ones to look out for. Years later he has released his sophomore project as a solo artist, but seemingly without any Terrafirma involvement or affiliation. Our guy Flowz decided to quiz him about this, his solo career and music in general, an interview that is exclusive to the Draft Pick Mix Show.

Locksmyth was first brought to my attention by our girl Nina C, she sent his single featuring Tony D (of the mighty Poisonous Poets crew) called ‘Turbulent Times’. It was the first of the promo’s for that day that I listened to as I figured anyone brave enough to feature Tony D on his lead single would need to be highly skilled!! Sure enough the tune was fire and Locksmyth earned my respect, I immediately added him to the list of essential guests for the show for this year and here we are!!

Do also check out the Draft Pick Mix Show Channel on You Tube for any updates, video’s, promo tracks & interviews etc.
