Yet again we at the end of another great year for the show and real hip hop music. Some people have exclaimed ‘Hip Hop is dead!!’ Nah fam you just aint been listening to the show. Sha Stimuli has inked a record deal including Koch Distribution via the up and coming label ‘Chambermusik Records’. His album ‘My soul to keep’ has been described by all accounts as nothing short of magnificent and he spoke to D Shanks for another Chambermusik/Draft Pick Mix Show exclusive interview special. Meanwhile Traum Diggs has been gaining recognition as an artist in his own right. He followed up his excellent Mixtape in 2008 with an EP/Mixtape entitled ‘The Throwback Series Vol.2’ with clever interpretations of some of the hip hop classics we know and love. Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for November 2009! This month we got 2 really talented artists from either side of the pond. I first met Supreme in 2002 after seeing his crew BS5 on the classic Dark N Cold UK Untapped Vol.2 video. On a video that had many great performances from UK legends, it was BS5’s performance that stood out. I had to get them on my next mixtape and got at them via Dark N Cold, since then they have unfortunately disbanded, but their lead rapper Supreme has embarked on a solo career and so here we are at it again. Kam Moye has been around on the underground circuit for some time now under the name Supastition. We had him on the November 2007 show where he first revealed to D Shanks that he will be releasing music as Kam Moye . So what is the difference between Kam Moye & Supastition? I hear you ask, listen to his album ‘Splitting Image’ for the answer!! Draft Pick October 09 Mix Show with Special Guests Locksmyth & Kyza Smirnoff Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for October 2009! This month we return to the UK to highlight some real hot homegrown talent. Kyza Smirnoff aka Kyza came onto the scene as part of the powerful North London group ‘Terrafirma’ lead by Klashnekoff. I remember his verse on the B side of the brilliant Jehst single ‘Alcoholic Author’ and knew that he and Terrafirma would be ones to look out for. Years later he has released his sophomore project as a solo artist, but seemingly without any Terrafirma involvement or affiliation. Our guy Flowz decided to quiz him about this, his solo career and music in general, an interview that is exclusive to the Draft Pick Mix Show. Locksmyth was first brought to my attention by our girl Nina C, she sent his single featuring Tony D (of the mighty Poisonous Poets crew) called ‘Turbulent Times’. It was the first of the promo’s for that day that I listened to as I figured anyone brave enough to feature Tony D on his lead single would need to be highly skilled!! Sure enough the tune was fire and Locksmyth earned my respect, I immediately added him to the list of essential guests for the show for this year and here we are!! The Juggaknots are considered by many to be one of the acts that shaped the underground movement to what it is today. This month we reached out to a respected veteran in UK Hip Hop & a legend in the making in Grime. Skeme gained much recognition for guesting on tracks with Roots Manuva, Masta Ace, Estelle, Seanie T and more, whilst lauching careers like Fallacy’s. What most may not be aware of is that in terms of music he goes as far back as the 80’s as a little nipper absorbing the energy from sounds like Saxon and Reggae artists of the era. I met him a few times over the years and was blessed to have him as host for my 2002 mixtape entitled ‘Knew Rulz Compilation Volume Four: South London Edition’. He spoke to my boy Flowz exclusively, about his latest moves and his opinions of the UK music scene. DaVinche has been steadily making a name for himself on the underground Grime scene, slowly, but surely beat by beat. His CV boasts production credits for Wiley, Ghetts, Kano, Sadie Ama, Estelle and more. His ‘Rider’ mixtape is incredible, different artists rhyming over an infectious beat that brings out the best in each artist..my favourite is the Remadee version. Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for July 2009! This month we have two very diverse homegrown talents in Mystro & Genesis Elijah . I first discovered Mystro on the Dark N Cold ‘UK Untapped’ video Volume 1 and was truly amazed and tried for ages to get in touch with him for a freestyle for one of my mixtapes, but proved difficult to schedule and his movements back and forth to Australia didn’t help either. Finally in 2009, our newest journalist, Flowz got at Mystro. Armed with a video camera and infectious enthusiasm, our guy Flowz delivered a really entertaining insight into the man I consider to be one of the most gifted British MC’s I’ve heard. Genesis Elijah caught everyone’s attention back in around 2005 – 2006 when he had Klashnekoff as a feature on a track called ‘Jah Bless’. It was a big deal at the time as Klashnekoff was ‘The Man’ on the hip hop scene, everyone knew his lyrics and his records used to fly of the shelf in my record shop. Since that track he has been developing his style and has been on songs of different musical genres. Flowz will track him down eventually and interview him with his trusty video camera, but till then I decided to interview him briefly for this months show (props to GE as he took time out on a Sunday to speak to me…thanks a million!!) Both interviews will be available on the Draft Pick Mix Show Channel on You Tube!! As everyone with a television should be aware, Michael Jackson has passed away. I used to be a massive fan of his music and everything up till ‘Bad’was incredible, he was in his peek in the ‘Off The Wall’ and ‘Thriller’ era. Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for June 2009! This month we celebrate our third year with a real strong Wu Affiliate line up and cameo appearance from a true hip hop legend. A huge big up goes to D Shanks who interviewed all artists in conjunction with Chambermusik.com. In March we spoke to Dom Pachino of Killarmy, this month we interviewed another member of the group, Kinetic 9 (formerly known as Beretta 9). He has worked closely with ‘The Rza’ himself on severall projects and is negotiating his solo career with a mixtape out and album in the works. Bizz is a newcomer of sorts, he has been in the background for a while and finally has launched his career with a truly hot mixtape featuring Kinetic 9, Freeway, Ghostface and others. D Shanks spoke to Kintic 9 & Bizz on a conference call, an interview which will be uploaded shortly. Fes Taylor is an artist who is affiliated to Inspectah Deck, he has recently released a project on Chambermusik Records called ‘Flight 10304’, he spoke to D Shanks who was stuck behind a video camera shooting for ‘Two 4 war TV’, the footage of which is available now on the Chambermusik channel on Youtube, excerts of which have been used for the Draft Pick Mix Show. During the Fes Taylor lead video tour of Staten Island, the ‘Big Homie’ Inspectah Deck graced us with an appearance, it’s footage not to be missed!! On our third birthday I wanna thank the entire Draft Pick Mix Show team, D Shanks, Nina C, DJ D’Chris and newer members, DJ Locky Stylez, Jon Peters and Flowz for all the work put in thus far. Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for May 2009! This month I’m joined by two artists who been in the game for a minute now, Karl Hinds & Capone of CNN!! As it is May again we are making it a Caribbean Special hosted by DJ D’Chris who runs the Caribbean Draft Pick Mix Show from Trinidad, his show will be restarting real soon. Before I go any further, I have the pleasure of announcing yet another addition to the Draft Pick Mix Show squad, DJ Locky Styles!! What’s great about this new member is that not only is he as talented and hard working as the rest of the team, but he also comes with his own internet radio station called ‘Flavourradio.com’ and his own team of music journalists. An extended version of The Draft Pick Mix Show will also be aired live on a Thursday between 7 and 9pm U.K time and for those newer members of the mailing list, they will also play some of the older shows!! Welcome to the team!! Karl Hinds first caught my attention when Westwood played ‘Don Gramma’, his version of Big L’s classic track ‘Ebonics’. This was the tune that made him real hot, with everyone falling over themselves to be associated with him and his label Ill Flava Records. To date, his CV reads about as good as any U.K rapper with collabs with Estelle, Roots Manuva, Blak Twang, Skinnyman, MCD & Mystro to name just a few. He appears on the show to promote the relaunch of Ill Flava Records, complete with a hot new improved website (www.illflavarecords.com), new business ventures with Baby Ray & Shade Sheist (yes that Shade Sheist) and a hot new album featuring my good buddy MC Theme & Jeff 3. One of the new journalists, Flowz, interviewed him exclusively, this is the first interview Karl has given for 3 years, and so is a very special moment for the show!! Capone of the rap duo Capone N Noreaga is currently promoting his solo career with a hot album called Menace to Society. Since his first release ‘The War Report’ back in the late 90’s he has struggled with incarcerations, label politics and rap beefs. It seems as if all that is behind him and it was great researching for the show, as he has been on some real classics over the years. He spoke very openly with our man D Shanks about his beginnings in the hip hop game, his relationship with the late great Notorious B.I.G, his lasting friendship with N.O.R.E and the New York scene at present. This month we thought we’d throw the spotlight on swagger, so who better from U.K than our own aptly named homegrown outfit S.A.S alongside Willie The Kid of DJ Drama’s camp – The Aphilliates. This month we are sponsored by the pioneering underground hip hop store 'Dark N Cold', they are one of the main reasons why underground UK hip hop has steadily grown from strength to strength!! S.A.S became known to myself via a legendary freestyle where they dissed most of the U.K rappers in the same fashion as 50 Cent did around that time in America. It was a song so controversial that even Tim Westwood opted out of playing it. They later reappeared on the UK shores armed with priceless affiliation and co-signature from Dame Dash and Dipset, it was what the U.K was waiting for, but unfortunately didn’t materialize. However they remain as popular as ever in the U.K and judging by their guest appearances and features it would seem that the same applies in America. They spoke exclusively with our Nina, which proved to be a no holds barred discussion where ..yes you guessed it…Juelz Santana’s name is mentioned a few times. Draft Pick March 09 Mix Show - Wu Affiliates Special Vol. 3 : Warriors Wu - Hosted by D Shanks with Special Guests Cappadonna & Dom Pachino (of Killarmy) Welcome to the Draft Pick Mix Show for March 2009! We promised you back in September 08 after the very popular show with Killah Priest that we gonna be knocking at the Wu door for some more Wu Affillate/Chambermusik.com specials and this month, thanks to ‘G Clef Da Mad Komposa’, we over-deliver!! What up with Cappadonna & Wu Tang? Is he in? Is he out? All I know is that he delivers a mean verse over some of the hottest Wu Tang production and is back with a new album via Chambermusik Records called ‘Slang Prostitution’ with some real hot songs. Those of you who have been following this show since it started in 2006 will no doubt be aware that he was my special guest on my ‘Undaground Undadogs Vol. 3’ Mixtape courtesy of veteran ‘Iron Shiek’ who also hosted the mix for me! D Shanks broke bread with the God and the exclusive interview will be uploaded shortly. Killarmy were one of the first Wu Affiliate groups to be released, their first album, I still hold in high regard. Although Killa Sin seems to be featured the most out of the group on other artists album guest slots, Dom Pachino seems to have the most material. Imagine my alarm, whilst researching for the show, at discovering that he has about 10 plus albums and mixtapes excluding the guest appearances he has done!!
